After the books closed: the quarter's biggest news happened too late to be in the numbers
The model's full reasoning — Q1 2024 call → NOWe need to determine if management reports that the most important positive developments of the period happened so late in the reported period or shortly after it ended that the results contain little or none of their effect, with management itself marking the timing. We need to look for management's own words conveying both halves: (1) late-breaking, concrete positive events that occurred near the end of the period or after, and (2) management treats them as the real story the numbers missed, i.e., that reported results reflect little or none of these developments and they are consequential. Let's scan the transcript for such statements. Kevin Blair's opening remarks mention several positive developments: "Our Grow the Bank initiative continued to gain traction in the first quarter, as we finalized our new GreenSky program, expanded our middle-market banker team, built our largest CIB pipeline to date, generated over 50 new relationships from our business owner wealth strategy, grew wealth AUM by 12% year-over-year, added a new commodities hedging capability and expanded existing relationships with approximately 75% of our treasury sales to existing clients." Also, "we are excited to introduce a differentiated new solution called Accelerate Pay... We launched this new capability earlier this month and the pipeline has been building steadily since the announcement." That's a launch in April (after quarter-end) but it's a new product, not necessarily a major positive development that changes trajectory? It's mentioned as a new capability, but not quantified as significant. Later, Jamie Gregory discusses the RWA optimization: "we would note that our risk-weighted asset optimization is currently underway, that is expected to result in a subset of our loan portfolio being eligible for a reduced risk weighting. When completed, this should support our capital ratios and provide flexibility for incremental capital deployment." That's not a concrete event that happened; it's ongoing and expected. Also, "Finally, on April 1st, we reclassified $3.4 billion of our securities portfolio from available-for-sale to held-to-maturity." That's a post-period event, but it's a balance sheet reclassification, not a positive development that generates revenue or growth. It reduces interest rate sensitivity, but it's not a "positive development" in the sense of new business.
